Bulgarian Propaganda posters from the 1960's onwards.
Like many countries within the Warsaw pact grouping, Bulgaria originally used tried and tested Soviet inspired designs of the Socialist realism genre for its posters. However, with the death of Dimtriov & Stalin, the post Stalinist idea of Art that was National in form but Socialist in content, began to emerge.
Visually distinct from Soviet work of the same era, it often took a new approach to reflect the Socialist society of Bulgaria at at time.Repeat images of heavy industry are common, reflecting Bulgarian importance in steel production & within the Oil sector.Unusually, although leeway was given to make the poster images and messages suitable to the Bulgarian population, the usual hammer & sickle iconography was often absent, the government diktat seemingly following a more nationalistic stance
Bulgarian propaganda posters are less well known than their Soviet counterparts, but readily identifiable and often artistically unique in their portrayal of officially proscribed themes. All of the posters on this site are original Bulgarian prints, thus will not be immaculate and subject to wear & tear on margins and corners - befiting their age and rarity
